The Chiclana City Council has been recognized with the first prize of the citiES 2030 Operation for the transformation project of Arroyuelo street. The award was presented during the annual citiES 2030 meeting, recently held in Madrid.
The city's mayor, José María Román, announced the distinction and installed the commemorative plaque on Arroyuelo street itself. He was accompanied by the delegate for Urban Maintenance, Mª Ángeles Martínez Rico, the delegate for Economic Development, Manuela Pérez, representatives of the street's hotel establishments, and the president of the Cooperativa Unión de Viticultores Chiclaneros, José Reyes.
Chiclana is part of the citiES 2030 Platform, which comprises about twenty cities across Spain. The city aims to join the Mission Cities Agreement, whose main objective is to achieve zero emissions by 2030.
The mayor highlighted the transformation of Arroyuelo street, which now features a nature-adapted solution with the planting of grapevines to provide shade. This initiative was awarded by the vote of the attendees at the annual citiES 2030 meeting.
José María Román invited citizens to suggest the planting of new grapevines or other types of plants or trees in other streets or squares in Chiclana, suggesting this shade solution as an alternative to awnings due to the strong easterly winds. He apologized for any inconvenience caused during the redevelopment and beautification works.
The project presented by Chiclana in Madrid, which aids and promotes the achievement of zero emissions, was the transformation of Arroyuelo street from a traffic-open road to a semi-pedestrian zone. The new structure for the grapevines has created shaded areas and improved accessibility.
Arroyuelo street, which was already called Arroyuelo in the 18th century due to a stream that ran between salt flats, links the project with the history of salt pans and local wineries. The project aims to recover the identity of Chiclana and shift the vision towards sustainability and meeting the goals of Agenda 2030.
