The presence of the oriental hornet in Cádiz has ceased to be an isolated phenomenon and has become a constantly expanding threat. A recent discovery in Puerto Real, in the backyard of a house in Marina de la Bahía, has highlighted the dimensions this insect can reach.
According to the resident's testimony, after alerting local authorities about the insect's presence, they were advised to eliminate it. The neighbor managed to kill the hornet using a specific wasp spray. The surprise came when measuring the specimen, which reached almost 4 centimeters in length.
“"It seems to be a queen or perhaps one of these emissaries that go around looking for a suitable place to build their nest."
The publication of the finding on social media has generated numerous reactions, with many users sharing similar experiences and sightings of oriental hornets in their own homes, even in the same area of Marina de la Bahía.
The province of Cádiz remains the epicenter of the spread of this species, which affects several localities. The oriental hornet not only poses a risk to humans but also causes damage to the environment. The coast, with its temperate climate and abundant food supply, offers an ideal environment for its rapid expansion.
Despite control campaigns implemented by local councils and the Junta de Andalucía, results have been limited due to the species' high reproductive capacity. Given the proliferation of this insect, it is crucial to know how to act in case of a sting. Specialists recommend washing the area with soap and water, applying local cold, and using over-the-counter antihistamines or analgesics for moderate reactions. In case of breathing difficulties, dizziness, or generalized swelling, immediate medical attention should be sought. It is also advised to avoid handling nests or dead hornets, as their defensive reaction can be dangerous even in such cases.
