The town of San Fernando is preparing to celebrate its traditional White Night, a summer event that brings culture to the streets with various activities, shows, and open-air concerts. This year, the cultural agenda includes the presentation of 'Alboroto', a production that surprisingly combines circus and flamenco.
Javier Prieto, one of the actors and responsible for the musical composition of the show, describes 'Alboroto' as a "crazy, over-the-top cabaret." The play portrays a dysfunctional family where each member possesses a unique skill and seeks to stand out above the others.
The fusion of circus and flamenco, while potentially unusual, shares common ground, according to Prieto. Both art forms seek public exposure, often for economic reasons, and flamenco, with its emphasis on spectacularity and dance virtuosity, shares a spirit of "juggling" with the circus.
This artistic union has precedents, such as the show 'Malgama', created about 25 years ago by Choni (Asunción Pérez), a flamenco dancer in 'Alboroto', and Jorge Barroso (Bifu). The company considers bringing this fusion to the streets a "necessity" to democratize flamenco, presenting it as accessible and participatory, far from elitist perceptions.
The circus element also adds a significant visual and spectacular component that attracts audiences. The performance of 'Alboroto' will take place this Friday, August 7th, starting at 9:30 PM, in front of the Camarón Museum, an emblematic location due to its importance in flamenco history.
This will be the seventh performance of 'Alboroto' and the first in the province of Cádiz. Those who miss it will have another opportunity on October 24th in Cádiz, as part of the Ibero-American Theater Festival.
