The political party Adelante Andalucía initiated the “Operation Save Public Healthcare” campaign in San Fernando, Cádiz, this Monday. The primary goal of this initiative is to highlight what the party perceives as a progressive decline in the public healthcare system of Andalusia and to gather citizens' experiences regarding the medical care they have received.
The campaign's presentation was led by the second candidate for the province of Cádiz to the Andalusian Parliament, who emphasized healthcare as a fundamental pillar in her party's political discourse, especially in the current pre-election context. During the event, held in the island town, specific reference was made to the situation of the Hospital de San Carlos.
“"What happens to people are not isolated cases."
The campaign seeks to document specific cases related to waiting lists, delays in medical appointments and diagnostic tests, as well as situations of overload in healthcare services. The candidate encouraged citizens to share their experiences to build a more comprehensive diagnosis of the situation.
Among Adelante Andalucía's proposals are ending healthcare agreements with private companies, recovering outsourced services, and creating a tax on the profits of large private healthcare companies. The revenue from this tax would be allocated, according to the proposal, to public cancer research. Furthermore, they advocate for strengthening primary care to guarantee medical appointments within a maximum of 48 hours and a minimum of ten minutes per patient, along with expanding the public service portfolio to include dental, visual, and nutritional health benefits, as well as specific mental health programs.
Healthcare remains a highly relevant issue on the Andalusian and Gaditan political agenda, with recurring complaints about waiting lists and response times in primary and specialized care. The campaign will culminate in a citizen mobilization scheduled for May 17, a key date to express dissatisfaction with the current state of public healthcare in Andalusia.
