The family of Raquel García Aranda, the 32-year-old lawyer from Málaga who remains hospitalized after the tragic train accident in Adamuz, has found a reason for joy with the birth of her son, Teo. This event, which occurred last Saturday, represents a «ray of hope» amidst their difficult situation, marked by a legal battle and the need for resources to cover Raquel's medical expenses.
Raquel, who was four months pregnant at the time of the incident, was traveling on the Iryo train with her partner, Iván, her sister Ana, and her dog. Three months after the accident, her health has shown significant improvement, although the path to full recovery is still long. The family shared their testimony with ABC, highlighting Raquel's strength and the impact of Teo's arrival on their lives.
It's going to be long. Raquel needs help because of Adamuz, and we are in a legal limbo.
Currently, the family faces a «legal limbo» due to the need to obtain provisional guardianship for Raquel. Her parents, Alberto and his wife, have been waiting for a month for judicial authorization from a Málaga court to manage their daughter's legal and financial affairs. This measure is crucial for them to participate in the judicial proceedings opened in Montoro (Córdoba) for the accident and access the necessary compensation to cover the high costs of her treatment.
The family's lawyer, Daniel García Prieto, a specialist in traffic accidents, has urgently requested guardianship. The need has become more pressing given the possibility that Raquel may soon be discharged from the ICU and require transfer to private centers, which would entail considerable expenses that the family cannot bear without adequate legal and financial support. The insurer, although willing to pay the amounts, requires a legal framework to do so.
“"She has evolved a lot. She is improving, but she still needs to evolve more."
Raquel's sister, Ana, a 26-year-old biochemist, has taken on a fundamental role in family management. She herself was a passenger on the crashed train and suffered injuries to one knee. Despite the tragedy, the family remains united and focused on Raquel's recovery, finding in Teo an inexhaustible source of motivation and strength to move forward.
“"That child will find out he has a mother when he already has, let's say, consciousness, right? And not the other way around."
Raquel's father, Alberto, has expressed his concern about his daughter's future and the lack of institutional support, with the sole exception of the mayor of Málaga, Francisco de la Torre, who has inquired about Raquel's condition. The family lives day by day, aware that Raquel's care will intensify, but with the hope that Teo's birth will be the definitive impulse for her recovery.
