Hospital Vithas Almería hosted an information point for the campaign The Weight of the Invisible, an initiative raising awareness about obesity developed in collaboration with Lilly. During the event, free body composition and muscle strength tests were offered, resulting in 90 personalized metabolic health reports for patients and visitors.
Dr. María Pérez de la Blanca, specialist in Internal Medicine at Hospital Vithas Almería and head of the initiative, emphasized that "obesity is a chronic, complex, and multifactorial disease that requires a comprehensive and personalized approach." She added, "Initiatives like this allow us to bring reliable, evidence-based information to our patients, as well as promote prevention and early detection of potential associated risk factors."
The specialist highlighted the detection of patients with elevated visceral fat levels who did not visibly present as obese. "Many people associate metabolic risk exclusively with visible excess weight. However, during this event, we found that numerous participants had high levels of visceral fat despite maintaining an apparently normal weight," she noted. She explained that "this type of fat, which accumulates around internal organs, is closely linked to a higher cardiovascular and metabolic risk."
In Spain, 18% of the adult population suffers from obesity, a figure that could reach 37% by 2035, according to the World Obesity Federation. Teresa Millán, from Lilly, stated that "with the The Weight of the Invisible campaign, we want people to become aware of the complexity and risks associated with this disease and the importance of offering patients a comprehensive and personalized approach." She added that "raising society's awareness about this pathology helps to eradicate stereotypes and encourages patients to consult reliable sources to improve their health."
Dr. Pérez de la Blanca emphasized the importance of identifying visceral fat, "which is not always visible." "This is precisely why these types of tests are so valuable, as they allow us to identify risk factors that go unnoticed and can have significant long-term health consequences," she indicated. The internist also highlighted the preventive impact, especially among younger people, by enabling them to "become aware and adopt changes in their eating habits, exercise, and lifestyle before more serious health problems arise."
According to data from the Ministry of Health, obesity is associated with over 200 pathologies, including type 2 diabetes, arterial hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, and certain types of cancer. The campaign aims, in addition to informing about less visible risks, to contribute to eliminating stigmas and false beliefs surrounding obesity.
The The Weight of the Invisible initiative, promoted by Lilly and endorsed by the Spanish Society for the Study of Obesity (SEEDO) and the National Association of People Living with Obesity (ANPO), is touring Spain. It is part of Vithas's commitment to health promotion and health education.
