The city of Almería honors the memory of Magistral Domínguez with a street, remembering a priest who, in the early 20th century, won the devotion of his faithful with his eloquence and charisma, leaving a lasting legacy.

In the urban fabric of Almería, a street between Regocijos and Pablo Iglesias Avenue bears the name of Magistral Domínguez. This designation, proposed in the Plenary Session of January 16, 1916 by councilman Naveros, sought to perpetuate the memory of a prelate who had recently passed away, leaving a profound impression on the community.
The death of José Joaquín Domínguez Rodríguez, known as Magistral Domínguez, at the young age of 51 in 1916, plunged Almería into deep mourning. His popularity was such that the erection of a statue in his honor on the main facade of the Cathedral was considered, a testament to the affection and admiration his contemporaries held for him.
Born in Tabernas in 1864, Domínguez Rodríguez spent part of his childhood in Roquetas de Mar under the tutelage of his uncle, Miguel Domínguez López, the local parish priest. This period was crucial for his spiritual and intellectual development, immersed in a family library that allowed him to explore the classics and consolidate his religious vocation.

In his uncle's house, you could find God in any hallway, on the table at lunchtime, or peeking out from the balcony among the geraniums that decorated it.

From a very young age, Magistral Domínguez showed exceptional intelligence and a natural inclination towards mysticism. At seven, he was already reading Latin texts, and at eight, he entered the Seminary of San Indalecio in Almería. Before turning 19, he was appointed professor of philosophy and oratory, standing out for his gifts and wisdom. In 1885, after being ordained a priest with a special dispensation, he became coadjutor in the parish of Santiago.
His arrival at the Santiago church marked a turning point. His figure, described as slender and of great inner beauty, captivated the faithful. Colloquially known as “El curilla” (the little priest), his sermons were so impactful that it was said he left audiences stunned, and some devotees even cried with emotion. His interventions were often met with ovations, as if the temple transformed into a theater. He was recognized as a true sage, and his youth only heightened the admiration for his vast knowledge.
Magistral Domínguez's charisma transcended religious boundaries. He was considered an artist of words, masterfully cultivating poetry, music, painting, and theater. His departure from Almería, upon being appointed magisterial canon of the Cathedral of Guadix, left a significant void in the hearts of his followers, who remembered him for his sweetness and his ability to move them.
