The Calar Alto Astronomical Observatory in Almería will restrict traffic and lighting in its vicinity from August 10th to 13th to ensure the darkness needed for scientific observation during the solar eclipse and the Perseid meteor shower.

The Calar Alto Astronomical Observatory, located in Almería, will implement traffic and lighting restrictions in its surroundings next week. These measures are being taken to facilitate the work of astronomical observation professionals in anticipation of two highly anticipated celestial phenomena: the solar eclipse on Wednesday, August 12th, and the usual appearance of the Perseids.
As announced by the observatory on its social media channels, starting Monday, August 10th, vehicle access to the observatory will be restricted from the road junction. Furthermore, the use of headlights for vehicles parked before reaching the final point is prohibited. The aim is to prevent crowds that could hinder scientific work, a situation that has occurred in previous years.
These restrictions are expected to remain in place until Thursday, August 13th, after the eclipse has concluded and the peak activity hours of the August meteor shower have passed. Observatory officials fear a massive influx due to the coincidence of the eclipse with the start of the Perseids, known as the Tears of San Lorenzo, and emphasize the area's strict light protection, which requires absolute darkness for scientific work.
To inform visitors, in addition to social media warnings, extraordinary signage will be installed around the domes. The Perseids, the most popular meteor shower of the year, will peak on the night of August 12th, just hours after the total solar eclipse, offering the chance to witness both spectacles in the province of Almería.
