The emblematic salt flats within the Cabo de Gata natural park currently display a concerning image for Almería: a desolate landscape with a notable absence of flamingos. This situation stems from the excessive slowness in restoring water levels, despite the completion of repair works on the underground galleries.
The primary issue lies within the subterranean galleries and channels responsible for introducing seawater into the wetland. Although urgent repairs, carried out by specialized miners, concluded successfully, the water flow is not advancing at the necessary speed to re-establish the delicate balance of the ecosystem.
As a consequence of the insufficient optimal depth in the ponds and the resulting scarcity of food, the vast majority of these wading birds have opted to take flight. They have departed for other ponds across the national geography that do guarantee suitable conditions for their survival and nesting.
