The city of Almería commemorated the 75th anniversary of the Canonical Coronation of its Patron Saint, the Virgen del Mar, with a moving eucharist at the Sanctuary, despite the procession being suspended due to adverse weather conditions.
On April 8, 1951, the Virgen del Mar was crowned on the esplanade of the Port of Almería, an event described by contemporary chronicles as a “radiant day.” Seventy-five years later, the commemoration was marked by a grey sky and the constant threat of rain, forcing the suspension of the traditional procession and planned outdoor events in the Plaza Vieja.
The decision by the Brotherhood's Board of Directors, announced the previous night, aimed to preserve the statue, its jewels, and ornaments. Nevertheless, the Sanctuary was filled with devotees from early morning, eager to venerate their Patron Saint. The events were limited to a solemn eucharist, broadcast by Canal Sur throughout Andalucía, and a subsequent concert by the Red Cross Music Band of Seville.

"To the joy proclaimed by the bells is added the thanksgiving of the children of this land of Almería in commemorating the LXXV anniversary of the Canonical Coronation of the Most Holy Virgen del Mar, patron saint and perpetual mayoress of Almería."
The mass was officiated by Bishop Mons. Gómez Cantero, concelebrated by a dozen priests, including the Vicar General and the Superior of the Dominicans. The Virgen del Mar Choir accompanied the ceremony, which was attended by civil and religious authorities, as well as military representatives. The Elder Brother, Jorge Fernández, delivered the opening reading, highlighting the joy and gratitude of the people of Almería on this significant date.

"Today is the Easter of the community, with the Risen Jesus as the protagonist. His Resurrection is essential to believe in Him. God reaches us in many ways. Here, before the Virgen del Mar, let us revive the flame of our faith."
During his homily, Bishop Gómez Cantero emphasized the importance of faith and resurrection, and a message from the Pope with his Apostolic Blessing was read. The mayor of Almería, María del Mar Vázquez, underscored the deep connection of the Virgen del Mar with the city's identity, calling it a “heritage of past, present, and future” and an opportunity to project Almería through its spiritual and cultural legacy.
The regional minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water, and Rural Development of the Junta de Andalucía, Ramón Fernández-Pacheco, congratulated the Brotherhood for its work, while the president of the Diputación de Almería, José Antonio García Alcaina, praised the organized program, despite the adverse weather, and highlighted the massive attendance of devotees at the Sanctuary.
