A trainee National Police officer, who was off-duty, performed a heroic act by saving the life of a 51-year-old man who suffered a heart attack at the Granaita Shopping Center in the town of Pulianas.
The officer, who has prior training from his job, quickly began cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) maneuvers until the arrival of health services. After identifying himself as National Police, the plainclothes officer assessed the man, who was in a recovery position and had a bleeding head wound, difficulty breathing, and a very weak pulse.
Moments later, the man went into cardiac arrest. The officer immediately began CPR, requesting assistance from a security guard at the shopping center to fetch an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). With the guard's help and instructions from the 112 operator, they followed the device's prompts to continue resuscitation.
The AED delivered three shocks before the Mobile Medical Unit arrived. The medical team, consisting of a driver, two nurses, and a doctor, asked the officer to continue the maneuvers while they supervised the device's fourth shock. Subsequently, the medical team stabilized the patient and transferred him to the Virgen de las Nieves Hospital.
Thanks to the officer's swift and effective action, the man, who was in a coma for ten days, has woken up and has been transferred to the Virgen del Rocío Hospital in Seville to continue his recovery. The trainee officer learned of the positive outcome through the victim's brother.
