The National Geographic Institute (IGN) has recorded nearly 40 seismic events in the province of Granada from midnight until 8:00 AM this Saturday. Most of the epicenters were located in towns within the Metropolitan Area, causing numerous residents to take to the streets and making rest difficult.
The sequence of tremors began around 1:08 AM, shortly after a magnitude 5 earthquake with an epicenter in Alhendín was recorded. This town also experienced four other minor movements (magnitudes 2 and 1.9).
Gójar was another of the most affected municipalities, with nine recorded aftershocks. The strongest tremor in this town was 3.3, occurring around 6:30 AM, and was strongly felt again in the 'Cinturón' metropolitan area and neighborhoods of the capital city.
Ogíjares also served as the epicenter for several seismic events, with a total of eight. The most intense was felt four minutes after the main magnitude 4 earthquake. The remaining tremors in this municipality were of low intensity.
Other municipalities such as Armilla and La Zubia registered two tremors each. Otura, Dílar, and Churriana de la Vega also experienced seismic movements with magnitudes between 1.6 and 2.2 during the early morning.
Seismic activity continued until 8:57 AM, when another magnitude 3 earthquake was recorded, again with its epicenter in Gójar, at a shallow depth according to IGN data.
