Following the strong earthquakes that shook the capital and the Metropolitan Area of Granada, the historic Fermasa chimney in Armilla, one of the structures that sustained significant damage, has been inspected by firefighters. The inspection, carried out on August 24th, determined the need to remove the dome and the upper part of the infrastructure to assess the exact extent of the damage to the bricks.
The seismic events, including the one on August 15th with its epicenter in Alhendín and several of magnitude 4 or higher on August 18th, have left cracks and damage in homes and buildings across the province, also affecting municipalities such as Las Gabias, La Zubia, and Ogíjares. The Fermasa chimney, standing 55 meters tall, suffered the fall of a piece from its upper section and cracks, damage that until this week was on a waiting list for review.
The chimney's inspection was classified as a level 3 urgency by the firefighters, prioritizing the review of inhabited dwellings. According to Raúl Robles, managing director of Fermasa, the structure could suffer greater damage in the event of another major earthquake. After the inspection, the Armilla City Council has engaged a specialized company for the prompt restoration of the chimney.
These works will allow upcoming events and activities planned for the venue, currently sealed off due to risk, to proceed normally. The intervention aims to repair the damaged materials and secure the structure against future aftershocks.
