Dozens of trout found dead in Dílar River due to lack of flow

The Somos Río Dílar Association reports the disappearance of water in the stretch passing through Otura and calls for sanctions against the Guadalquivir Hydrographic Confederation.

Dry riverbed in Andalusia with dead fish and cracked earth under an intense sun.

The Somos Río Dílar Association has reported the appearance of dozens of dead trout in the Dílar River, as it passes through the municipality of Otura, due to the drastic decrease in its water flow in recent weeks.

The association has reported the events, which occurred on the morning of last Thursday, to the Consejería de Medio Ambiente of the Junta de Andalucía, to the Seprona, and to the Confederación Hidrográfica del Guadalquivir (CHG). They request that the corresponding sanctioning files be opened and measures be taken to prevent serious alterations to public hydraulic domain.
It is recalled that the common trout (Salmo trutta) is officially classified as 'Endangered' in Andalusia, a threat level comparable to that of the Iberian imperial eagle. The species' decline is attributed to water pollution, alteration of riverbeds, and drying up of rivers due to extractions for human and hydroelectric use.
The association points out that the competent Water Basin Authority, the CHG, establishes an 'Ecological Minimum Flow' to ensure the conservation of the ecosystem and its inhabitants, especially endangered species. However, in the case of the Dílar River, the stretch passing through Otura lacked flow, allegedly failing to meet the required 312 liters per second in the lower section.
Somos Río Dílar criticizes that the CHG is not complying with European requirements to improve the condition of Spanish rivers and that its application of responsibility in the ecological minimum flow regime is insufficient.
The solution proposed by the association is not to pit uses against conservation, but to find a dialogued middle ground. They propose a forum including the Ministry of Sustainability and Environment, the CHG, water users, and conservation associations, to reconcile water use with the conservation of the river as public domain.
