The Alhaurín de la Torre City Council celebrated International Rural Women's Day with an emotional tribute to María del Carmen Mestanza, a resident known for her connection to rural life and her fight to preserve the Vega de Mestanza.
The event, focused on the school community with the participation of local students, took place at the ‘Vicente Aleixandre’ Cultural Center. The mayor, Joaquín Villanova, read an institutional manifesto highlighting the importance of economic autonomy and access to public services for rural women.
Villanova praised the role of rural women, both from previous generations and the honoree, María del Carmen Mestanza, and stressed the need to guarantee equal opportunities in rural areas.
Schoolchildren presented research projects on the lives and careers of women from Alhaurín, highlighting their contributions.
“"The countryside is food, it is the basis of life and must be defended; and we, from our small plot, have done our part to save an area that was destined to disappear."
María del Carmen Mestanza, a retired teacher, was recognized for her work defending the Vega de Mestanza, which helped halt the construction of a wastewater treatment plant. Her daughter, Mercedes Mestanza, praised her work ethic, commitment, and deep respect for nature.
The mayor and the Equality Councilor, María del Carmen Molina, presented the honoree with a gift and an olive bonsai, recognizing her achievements and well-deserved tribute.
