This public recognition is part of the ‘Guillena is Music’ Cultural Music Route, which highlights the town's deep-rooted musical tradition. The event was attended by the mayor of Guillena, Lorenzo Medina, the Councilor for Culture, Natividad Fernández, and family members of the honoree.
The day was filled with music, featuring performances by the ‘Villa de Guillena’ Music Band, the ‘Veterans Musicians of Olmo and Olmo Family’ Band, and the Unión Cumbres Mayores-Higuera la Real Band. These ensembles presented a musical parade and short concerts, concluding with a joint rendition of the pasodoble ‘Maestro Olmo’.
Francisco Olmo Sosa, born in Guillena on July 7, 1921, was a central figure in local music. He joined the Guillena Music Band at a young age and, after studying with prominent musicians, directed the Municipal Band and the Guillena Musical Association from 1959 to 1994, later becoming honorary director.
‘Maestro Olmo’ served as a benchmark for new generations of musicians. He passed away on December 19, 2007, and was bid farewell by numerous musicians. Throughout his life, he received multiple tributes, including the inauguration of the municipal auditorium bearing his name in 1998 and the Band Competition named after him.
The ‘Guillena is Music’ Cultural Music Route also features a sculpture dedicated to José Velázquez Alfaro, the first director of the Guillena Music Band from 1929 to 1957, which was unveiled in March 2024.
