The program of activities designed for the tricentennial of the birth of Felipe de Neve, an illustrious figure from Bailén and founder of Los Angeles, will commence this September. The first event will take place on Sunday, September 13th, with the concert ‘Music in the Era of Felipe de Neve’, performed by the Unión Musical Bailenense under the direction of Antonio Garrido.
The concert will be held at the Church of the Incarnation in Bailén, a site of architectural and historical value. Starting at 8:30 PM, the public will enjoy a repertoire of classical music from the Baroque and Classical periods, featuring works by composers such as Georg Friedrich Händel, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and Johann Sebastian Bach. Admission is free until full capacity is reached.
The Councilor for Tourism and Historical Heritage, Juan Jesús Padilla, highlighted the importance of initiating this program to foster dialogue between local heritage and history. He noted that Felipe de Neve is a figure of great historical significance whose dimension deserves to be better known, both in Bailén and beyond, for his decisive role in the history of California and the founding of Los Angeles.
Padilla emphasized that the tricentennial represents an “extraordinary opportunity” to promote and value the figure of Felipe de Neve, stating the responsibility to ensure that such a relevant personality is not forgotten. The councilor explained that the City Council has designed a diverse program with musical activities, exhibitions, theatrical proposals, and educational actions to introduce his figure from various perspectives.
This Sunday's concert marks the beginning of an extensive commemorative program that will extend until the last quarter of 2027, including a Baroque music cycle and other exhibition, theatrical, and educational initiatives. Juan Jesús Padilla invited residents and visitors to participate in this first event, highlighting the emblematic venue and the music of great composers from the era.
For the organization of this concert, the Bailén City Council has collaborated with the Unión Musical Bailenense, the Parish of the Incarnation, the Provincial Council of Jaén, and Caja Rural de Jaén.
