Asturian Driver Dominates First Day of Sierra Morena Rally

An Asturian driver has demonstrated his superiority on the first day of the Sierra Morena Rally, consolidating his position as the main candidate for overall victory in the competition held in Córdoba.

The Asturian competitor has emerged as the top favorite to win the Sierra Morena Rally, following an exceptional Saturday. The driver, who recently triumphed in the La Nucía Rally, showcased excellent form by setting the best times in four of the six stages contested during the first full day of the event.
Currently, the leader holds a 20.7-second advantage over the second-placed driver, Álvaro Muñiz, and has pulled ahead by 29.6 seconds from third place, occupied by Iván Ares. Barring a major surprise in the final stages, the winner of the competition is expected to come from this leading trio, with the Asturian driver being the clear contender to complete his excellent performance and leave Córdoba with the victory.
After the spectacle on Friday evening with the urban stage, where a Czech driver became the first leader, the Sierra Morena Rally intensified on Saturday, with favorable weather and a large crowd of fans following the race roadside. The Asturian driver and his co-driver quickly showed their credentials with a spectacular first run through the Obejo-Villanueva de Córdoba stage, where they managed to gain an advantage over their rivals.
The Asturian team's relentless pace continued on the Pozoblanco-Villaharta stage, further extending their lead over Iván Ares and containing the advance of Italian driver Giandomenico Basso. Meanwhile, other competitors like Finnish driver Teemu Suninen began to experience difficulties, and the reigning European Rally Champion, Marczyk, suffered an incident that took him out of the competition. Another British participant was also forced to abandon his aspirations after a tire issue.
With the Sierra Morena Rally testing the mechanics of the vehicles, the Espiel stage added excitement to the race. Iván Ares managed to close the gap, while the Asturian driver maintained his strong pace and Álvaro Muñiz emerged to overtake Basso and Suninen, demonstrating a consistency that propelled him to the leading positions by the end of the day.
However, the leader delivered a decisive blow to his opponents at the start of the second loop, once again being the fastest on the Obejo-Villanueva de Córdoba stage, distancing Iván Ares and Giandomenico Basso. On the second pass through the Pozoblanco-Villaharta stage, mechanical problems arose for another competitor, leading to the neutralization of part of the stage and preventing larger gaps. By the close of Saturday's action, the Asturian driver consolidated his first place heading into Sunday, followed by Álvaro Muñiz and Iván Ares, with Basso and Suninen also close behind, setting the stage for an exciting finish to the Sierra Morena Rally.
