The Laja Alta route, located in the heart of Los Alcornocales Natural Park, has become one of the most unique hiking experiences in the Campo de Gibraltar region. This journey combines wild nature with valuable historical and archaeological heritage.
The circular trail, nearly 13 kilometers long with moderate difficulty, culminates at the Laja Alta rock shelter. In this unique enclave, paintings of ships, dating back thousands of years, are preserved and considered among the most remarkable representations of the so-called “Arte Sureño” (Southern Art).
The itinerary, which starts between kilometers 6 and 7 of the road between Jimena and Puerto de Gáliz, traverses spectacular landscapes dominated by cork oaks and holm oaks. Hikers will enjoy historic farmhouses and panoramic views of the region, passing by the Hozgarganta river and beautiful wooded areas.
The highlight is the Laja Alta shelter, where the paintings, protected by bars for their preservation, display surprising details of ships with sails, oars, and figureheads. Researchers suggest these representations might be linked to the early Mediterranean colonizations of the Iberian Peninsula, making the site a place of great uniqueness in Andalusia.
The hike features an accumulated elevation gain of about 467 meters and is estimated to take around five hours. It is recommended to take the route slowly to appreciate the surroundings and the views towards Sierra Bermeja, Casares, and Jimena Castle.
It is important to note that part of the route crosses private land. Therefore, it is advisable to request permission from the owners or staff at the Altabacar farmhouse before accessing the area.
This trail has gained popularity among hiking enthusiasts and history lovers for its unusual fusion of nature, archaeological heritage, and sense of adventure.
