Óscar Torres, spokesperson for the Socialist Municipal Group in the Cádiz City Council, has described the recent request by Mayor Bruno García to the Minister of Housing to finance 275 protected homes in the city as "shamelessness and political hypocrisy." Torres stated that the PSOE supports any investment beneficial to citizens but demands that the Popular Party government "stop fooling citizens" and assume its own responsibilities.
The socialist criticized the "absolute cynicism" of Bruno García in seeking to benefit from the State Housing Plan and Government of Spain funds, recalling that his party has tried to "block, boycott, and overturn" these tools. According to Torres, the PP not only rejected and appealed the State Plan and the Housing Law before the Constitutional Court but also, at the local level, has systematically opposed declaring Cádiz a tense area to control rental prices and to protect Official Protection Housing (VPO), arguing that their policy is to "speculate with these homes".
Torres pointed out the "constant contradiction" of the PP of Cádiz, which in Madrid and Brussels seeks to block resources, while in Cádiz it requests funds from the central Government due to its inability to generate its own or regional alternatives.
The socialist spokesperson also criticized the "complicity" of Bruno García with the president of the Junta de Andalucía, Juanma Moreno. He noted that the PP argued in the municipal plenary session against increasing the investment budget of the regional administration, which has exclusive competencies in housing, in the Andalusian capital. "The difference between the PSOE and the PP is very clear: the socialists demand that the Government of Spain continue investing in Cádiz, and we demonstrate this with actions; but Bruno García is incapable of demanding anything from the Junta de Andalucía," he stated.
Torres recalled "historical grievances" where the local PP acted oppositely in the city and in the institutions that decided the province's future, comparing it to the "worst times of Teófila Martínez," who voted against contracts for Navantia from her seat as a deputy while demanding work for the shipyards in Cádiz.
The socialist spokesperson highlighted that the mayor today depends on Next Generation funds, despite the PP voting against these aids. "Today, all public housing developments being built or planned in Cádiz are financed by European funds secured by the Government of Pedro Sánchez. Homes are being built in Cádiz despite the Popular Party, not thanks to them," he remarked.
Finally, Óscar Torres warned that the PSOE of Cádiz will not allow Bruno García to "take credit for achievements that are not his" at the expense of the State's investment effort. "We support the request for funds because Cádiz urgently needs housing, but we denounce the double standard of a mayor who remains silent and submissive before Moreno Bonilla," he concluded.
