The Spanish diplomatic representation in Israel, which has been operating since the ambassador's withdrawal, was called in for an official reprimand. This incident occurred during the traditional Judas Burning, celebrated on Easter Sunday in the town of El Burgo.
“"The atrocious antisemitic hatred manifested here is a direct consequence of the systematic incitement by the Government of Pedro Sánchez."
Through a statement released on the social network X, the Israeli Foreign Ministry shared a video of the event and accused the Spanish Government of "systematic incitement." The statement concludes by criticizing the Spanish executive's "silence" regarding the video and the summoning of the Chargé d'Affaires.
On April 5, residents of El Burgo burned a seven-meter effigy, filled with approximately 14 kilograms of gunpowder, representing Netanyahu. According to the town's mayor, María Dolores Narváez, who spoke to Efe, the act symbolized the message "No to war, to genocide."
It is worth noting that in the 2025 edition of this same festival, the figure burned was that of former United States President, Donald Trump. This incident adds to recent diplomatic tensions, where Netanyahu accused Spain of waging a "diplomatic war" against Israel, referring to Spanish criticisms of the offensive in Gaza and its stance against the war with Iran and attacks on Lebanon.
Previously, Israel had announced the expulsion of the Spanish representative from the coordination center for the reconstruction and stabilization of Gaza, located in Kiryat Gat, southern Israel.
