The Málaga Provincial Council and Cruz Roja have formalized an agreement to promote the production, conservation, and reforestation of the pinsapo and other tree species in the province, with a special focus on the Sierra de las Nieves.
This agreement aims to strengthen the environmental heritage of the province, focusing on the abies pinsapo, an emblematic species of the region. The initiative not only focuses on ecological sustainability but also integrates a significant social component, promoting the participation of volunteers and vulnerable groups.
“
"The agreement establishes collaboration between the Provincial Council and Cruz Roja to promote conservation and reforestation through the participation of volunteers and vulnerable groups. Values related to environmental education and awareness are promoted."
The collaboration extends to the municipalities of the Sierra de las Nieves, where Cruz Roja manages a specialized nursery in Yunquera. This nursery is crucial for the complex process of pinsapo seedling production, which includes seed treatment, selection, sowing, maintenance, and adaptation for reforestation.

"We have been helping for decades, and in this case, it is not only an environmental action but also a social action. That is, to energize the elderly, young people, and the entire community of residents."
The actions planned within the framework of this agreement foster citizen participation, intergenerational coexistence, and the promotion of healthy habits. Furthermore, information, education, and environmental awareness campaigns are promoted, targeting students, neighborhood associations, businesses, and professionals in the Sierra de las Nieves region.
Last year, through the Provincial Network of Nurseries of the Málaga Provincial Council, 7,500 plants were produced and distributed to various municipalities. Currently, the province has three nurseries: one in Benamocarra, one in Ardales (undergoing improvement to reach a capacity of 260,000 specimens), and the one in the Sierra de las Nieves in Yunquera, managed in collaboration with Cruz Roja. In November, a planting of 140 two-year-old pinsapo specimens was carried out in the Yunquera National Park, with the aim of improving the situation of this species in the province and in Spain.
