The jury of the 1st 'Healthy Towns' Competition of the province of Huelva, organized by the Provincial Council of Huelva and the College of Physicians, has granted these awards. The aim is to highlight the municipalities most active in promoting healthy habits and creating urban environments that enhance the quality of life for their residents.
The awards were presented by the president of the Provincial Council, David Toscano, and the president of the College of Physicians, Mercedes Ramblado, along with Juan Antonio Cordón, to the mayor of Aracena, Manuel Guerra González, and the mayor of Jabugo, Gilberto Domínguez. The ceremony took place in Ayamonte during the Council of Mayors meeting.
Jabugo received the award in the category for populations between 1,500 and 3,000 inhabitants, while Aracena won in the category for over 3,000. Both municipalities are recognized for their continuous attention to public health, health education, and their conviction that prevention is key to physical and mental well-being.
David Toscano emphasized the importance of holding these awards at the Council of Mayors, highlighting that the competition distinguishes municipalities that, by managing services, preserving heritage, and creating employment, protect a way of life.
Juan Antonio Cordón noted the high quality of the submitted proposals, praising the privileged natural environment of the Sierra de Aracena and Picos de Aroche Natural Park, as well as its gastronomic and historical heritage. He stated that both towns have been caring for the health of their inhabitants for decades.
Mercedes Ramblado added that the measures adopted in both towns aim at health awareness and care for both young people, in an increasingly sedentary society with poorer eating habits, and for the elderly, combating loneliness and fostering intergenerational connection.
It was emphasized that health is a pillar of sustainable development, influenced by the environment, and requires urban planning measures such as trails or outdoor gyms, as well as activities, workshops, and talks to promote healthy eating and self-care. The College of Physicians and the Provincial Council continue to offer their support in this area.
The expert jury evaluated local health strategies, environmental actions, promotion of physical activity, nutrition, health education, and collaboration with the healthcare system. This competition, initially promoted by the College of Physicians of Córdoba, has now extended to provinces like Soria and Huelva.
