A tragic accident has shocked adventure sports enthusiasts in Andalusia. A 69-year-old canyoner lost his life after becoming trapped at the bottom of a difficult-to-access gorge in the Barranco de la Bolera, located in Pozo Alcón, province of Jaén.
The alarm was raised on Wednesday at 5:30 PM when a companion of the sportsman contacted the 1-1-2 Emergency Service. The caller reported that the man was canyoning and was trapped in the gorge's streambed, approximately one hundred meters from the bank and at the end of a ravine, making self-rescue impossible due to immobility and terrain conditions.
The call immediately activated the protocols of the Regional Emergency Agency of Andalusia, attached to the Regional Ministry of Health, Presidency, and Emergencies of the Junta de Andalucía. The 1-1-2 coordination center managed the urgent dispatch of specialized personnel, including the Firefighters of the Sierra de Cazorla Consortium, the Guardia Civil, and the Local Police of Pozo Alcón. The 061 Sanitary Emergency Center also sent units to provide immediate assistance.
The Barranco de la Bolera features narrow sections requiring advanced progression techniques. Mountain specialists and firefighters coordinated the descent to the exact point, facing steep terrain that hindered access efforts. After intense work, rescue personnel located the man, but medical professionals could only confirm his death. Rescuers proceeded to evacuate the body.
The Guardia Civil has initiated a technical investigation to clarify the exact causes of the incident and determine the factors that led to this fatal outcome in the Jaén sierra.
