A 69-year-old man has lost his life after becoming trapped inside a gorge in the municipality of Pozo Alcón, in the province of Jaén. The incident occurred yesterday, Wednesday, when a companion alerted the 112 emergency service at 5:30 PM.
According to the alert call, the victim was canyoning in the La Bolera gorge and was trapped about one hundred meters from the shore, at the end of a ravine. Emergency services, including firefighters from the Consorcio de Bomberos de Sierra de Cazorla, the Guardia Civil, the Policía Local, and the Centro de Emergencias Sanitarias 061, were dispatched to the scene.
Rescue teams managed to recover the lifeless body of the canyoner. This incident follows another rescue that took place last Saturday, May 23rd, in the area, where a 66-year-old woman from Aranjuez was assisted after suffering a fall while hiking near the Monasterio de Montesión, in the municipality of Cazorla.
On that occasion, Guardia Civil officers located the hiker on a difficult-to-access slope, with a suspected leg fracture. She was evacuated on a stretcher to an accessible point and later transferred by ambulance to the Hospital de Alta Resolución de Cazorla.
Authorities are reminding the public of the importance of exercising extreme caution when engaging in outdoor activities, especially in challenging terrain and during high temperatures. They recommend planning routes in advance, carrying a mobile phone with sufficient battery, and appropriate equipment.
