In a commitment to educational entertainment, the Association for the Defense and Promotion of the Historical, Artistic, and Natural Heritage of Olvera has designed 'Playing with our Heritage'. This initiative seeks to bring together various groups, from schoolchildren to seniors, around a spiral board representing the town's monuments, streets, customs, traditions, natural sites, and emblematic products.
The game, comprising 56 squares, includes references to elements as diverse as the castle, Holy Week, olive oil, 'sopas pegás', the Peñón de la Alameda, the Torre del Olivilla, Calle Llana, Calle Jesús, the Plaza de la Iglesia, the Church of Our Lady of the Incarnation, the Sanctuary of Los Remedios, and the Vía Verde, among others.
The original idea came from Francisco Menacho, former president of the association and a prominent local figure, who has collaborated with the school community, the Taomi disability center, and senior programs. The board's design is by fellow Olvera resident Ildefonso Troya.
This initiative is part of the preparations for the 700th anniversary of the Conquest of the Villa by King Alfonso XI, which will be celebrated next year, and is already making a significant impact on Olvera's cultural agenda, led by the City Council.
The board, measuring 40x40 cm and made of PVC by a local company, features 15 special squares focused on key monuments like the castle and Caño Santo. Of these, 11 display paintings by local artists and 4 feature photographs of representative locations. Landing on these squares requires participants to answer Trivial-style questions, such as: 'Which Christian king conquered Olvera from the Muslims in the year 1327? Answer: Alfonso XI'.
The initiative is sponsored by the Provincial Culture Foundation of the Diputación de Cádiz, Fundación La Caixa, the Olvera City Council, and the Designation of Origin for Sierra de Cádiz Olive Oil.
