The Junta de Andalucía has announced that, unlike all other maritime and continental beaches in the region, this specific area is not suitable for swimming. The decision is based on information provided by the Confederación Hidrográfica del Guadiana, which confirms the presence of cyanobacteria.
The swimming season, which began on June 1st, is proceeding normally elsewhere in the region. During the second half of July, isolated incidents of microbiological contamination were reported at beaches in Málaga (Pedregalejo and El Palo), Marbella (El Cable-Río Real and Los Monteros), and Cádiz (Zahara de los Atunes). These incidents were resolved, and the waters were declared safe after intervention by health authorities. A short-lived incident was also reported at Costacabana beach (Almería), which has since been resolved.
The Health Surveillance Program for Bathing Waters analyzed samples from 389 sampling points across 304 bathing areas during the latter half of July. The new continental bathing area, Río Genal in Faraján (Málaga), was also included. Microbiological analyses and tests for physical parameters such as transparency, color, oils, persistent foam, and solid waste concluded that the waters are safe for swimming at the vast majority of locations.
Among the continental bathing areas analyzed are La Balsa Cela de Lúcar (Almería), the La Breña II Reservoir in Almodóvar del Río, and the La Colada Dam in El Viso (Córdoba), as well as the reservoirs of Arcos de la Frontera, Bornos, and Arroyomolinos in Zahara de la Sierra (Cádiz).
