Invitations had already been sent out for what was expected to be a dream wedding amidst olive groves. However, the ceremony has been postponed because A.C.G., one of the fiancés, has been in prison since May 1st. The reason is his alleged involvement in a marijuana cultivation operation on a farm located in El Bosque (Cádiz).
A.C.G. is the nephew of veteran union leader and former lawmaker Diego Cañamero. He is under investigation for allegedly setting up a cannabis plantation on the 'Tierra y Libertad' farm, which was purchased by the Sindicato Obrero del Campo (SOC) with public funds. The Guardia Civil arrested Cañamero and his son, accusing them of a crime against public health and another of electricity fraud. A judge in Ubrique ordered provisional detention without bail for the nephew, while the father was released. The investigation remains open.
The police operation took place on April 29th at the 'Tierra y Libertad' farm, managed by relatives of the Sindicato Andaluz de Trabajadores (SAT). Officers discovered a sophisticated marijuana plantation inside a warehouse, illegally connected to the electrical grid. During the raid, 800 cannabis plants, 80 kilograms of dried buds, cocaine, and hashish were found, suggesting the farm might also have served as a storage and retail point.
The news has caused surprise in El Bosque, a municipality of 2,250 inhabitants where Cañamero's relatives reside. The 'Tierra y Libertad' farm was acquired in 1988 with a 162,000 euro subsidy from the Junta de Andalucía to provide work for day laborers. Over time, the cooperative came under the control of José Manuel Cañamero, his wife, and his sister-in-law, functioning like private property.
“"The National Permanent Committee of the SAT has distanced itself from the clan, calling what happened at ‘Tierra y Libertad’ a 'stab in our history'."
The inmate's brother, known as 'Cañita', was a former footballer from the Betis youth academy. Diego Cañamero, known for his social activism, has not commented on the family scandal.
