Spring marks the harvesting season for green asparagus, and Alcalá del Valle celebrates it with its traditional fair. This year, the XII edition of the event, running until Sunday, is supported by the Provincial Council of Cádiz and takes place at the town's fairgrounds. The program includes a wide variety of activities, from free tastings and workshops to children's attractions, sports events, and musical performances, all centered around this emblematic product of Alcalá's gastronomy.
The president of the Provincial Council, Almudena Martínez, attended the inauguration, accompanied by the mayor, Rafael Aguilera, the delegate of the Government of the Junta de Andalucía in Cádiz, Mercedes Colombo, and the president of the Sociedad Cooperativa Agrícola Andaluza Europeos, Paqui Alvárez. Martínez del Junco highlighted the efforts of the more than 70 families who cultivate asparagus in the area, transforming this product into a "gastronomic ambassador" for Alcalá del Valle and the entire province, with exports to European countries.
“"The work and effort of the men and women dedicated to asparagus cultivation in Alcalá del Valle have transformed this healthy and humble product into a true gastronomic ambassador for Alcalá and the entire province."
The president also referred to the challenges faced by farmers due to last winter's storms, which caused a loss of over 30% in asparagus production, according to cooperative data. In this context, Martínez del Junco congratulated the cooperative for its work in creating employment and retaining population, merits for which the Provincial Council of Cádiz awarded them the Provincial Medal in 2026.
For her part, Mercedes Colombo emphasized the fair as an opportunity to enjoy the municipality's attractions from an economic, agri-food, tourist, and cultural perspective. She stressed that Alcalá del Valle's green asparagus is a source of wealth and employment, valued for its benefits, flavor, and quality, contributing to sustainable development and the excellence of the provincial agri-food sector.
Mayor Rafael Aguilera praised the Europeos cooperative as a "vital collective tool" for the town, essential for the economy and employment, especially in the reconstruction after the storms. The 2026 fair features a market for agricultural and artisanal products, a stage for live cooking demonstrations, gastronomic competitions, workshops, and activities such as a sports race, painting and poetry contests, and various musical performances.
