Construction has officially started on the Poniente-Miralbaida Park in Córdoba. This initiative, which will add nine hectares of green space to the area surrounding the ronda de Poniente, is part of the municipal strategy to finalize the city's extensive green ring. The project involves an investment exceeding 4.5 million euros and has an estimated execution period of 16 months, with completion projected for early 2028.
Miguel Ángel Torrico, president of the Municipal Urban Planning Agency, highlighted that this development is crucial for Mayor José María Bellido's term and follows previous interventions in other areas like El Patriarca, Levante, and El Flamenco. The mayor noted that this park will bring the total new green spaces developed in the last seven to eight years to approximately 1.3 million square meters, in addition to the 763 trees specifically planted in Poniente-Miralbaida, alongside over 1,500 existing ones.
The green ring concept, part of the urban planning since 1986 and approved in the General Urban Planning Plan of 2001, aims to balance urban growth with recreational areas and improved quality of life. The Poniente-Miralbaida Park, with its significant size, is designed for urban and environmental integration, shielding its recreational zones from surrounding traffic.
Rafael Ruiz Jiménez, head of Projects at the Agency, explained that the design prioritizes protection from heavy traffic, dividing the park into two sectors connected by the ronda de Poniente. Sustainable urban drainage systems will also be implemented to naturally manage rainwater, allowing it to infiltrate the ground and reducing the load on the city's sewer network. The project also includes a cistern and a shed for gardening equipment, which will serve both this park and the future Poniente-Figueroa park.
A key improvement will be a new pedestrian connection linking the Miralbaida neighborhood with the Poniente districts via the green space. This is particularly significant for Miralbaida, an established area that has long awaited this green zone, and it will act as a connector between various urban sectors, including expansion areas like Arroyo del Moro. Road configurations will also be modified to improve traffic flow, and a new pedestrian crossing will be created.
Mayor Bellido views this park as the start of a new phase focusing on the edges of the ring roads, following projects in other green spaces. The Poniente-Miralbaida Park will be a pioneering development in such locations, with the Poniente-Figueroa park project to follow.
