The International Puppet Fair of Seville has provided the setting for a significant moment in the history of Andalusian theater. The Titiritrán company, renowned for its work with puppets and objects for children and family audiences, is celebrating three decades of uninterrupted activity this year. Their inaugural work, Cuarto de Cuentos, first performed in 1996, has become a benchmark in the Andalusian puppet scene and remains one of the most requested productions by programmers across Spain.
The vision of the company's creators when conceiving Cuarto de Cuentos has endured over time. The play features Mama Carmen, a traveling grandmother, interacting with a table full of books, while the little mouse Cora explores them. The volumes come to life in a magical atmosphere, enchanting young spectators who follow with wonder the adventures of Lucila, a girl with aspirations of becoming a singer.
The set design of Cuarto de Cuentos is an example of imagination and dedication, crafted to treat its young audience, from three years old, with absolute respect. The story of Lucila, a brave and cheeky girl who speaks in verse and skips school, along with her father Marcelo and a furry monster, is particularly relevant in 2026, a year when digital games and luminous screens have largely replaced analog experiences. The enthusiastic and curious response from children demonstrates the timelessness of the proposal.
“"This is not intended to be a comment on a show; it is, without a doubt, a recognition of sincere, honest, beautiful work that has marked Titiritrán's career."
The soft voice of the company's co-creator and the versatility of the other co-creator in bringing the characters to life are key elements of their success. The company has continued to create magical stories, rich in visual elements, that break with traditional narratives and seek to transmit values through their productions.
The morning performance at the Sala Escénica of the Real Fábrica de Artillería was sold out. There is still another opportunity to see the play this evening at seven. The 46th International Puppet Festival of Seville runs until May 23, offering an extensive stage program and various puppet exhibitions at the Teatro Alameda and the Artillería facilities.
