The Illustrious Official College of Veterinarians of Seville has awarded the prize for the Best Bull of the Seville April Fair 2025 to the specimen 'Profesor' from the Alcurrucén ranch, in recognition of its exceptional bravery and morphological characteristics.
The award ceremony, held on Friday, April 10, highlighted the objectivity of this award, which in its XVI edition, is granted by a group of expert veterinarians. Journalist Inmaculada León Castro, who hosted the event, emphasized these professionals' deep understanding of the bull's conditions and behavior in the bullring.
“
"It is one of the fairest recognitions because a group of experts makes a truly objective assessment; they are the ones who best truly know the conditions of the bull and its behavior in the arena."
Santiago Sánchez-Apellániz, president of the Illustrious Official College of Veterinarians of Seville, highlighted the connection of the Alcurrucén ranch with the Núñez lineage, a unique bloodline in bullfighting. The award is the only one of its kind granted exclusively by veterinarians, who evaluate the bull from a morphological and functional perspective, recognizing the work of governing teams and veterinarians involved in bullfighting spectacles in the province of Seville.
The jury emphasized the "good conformation of the Núñez lineage, the greed and extraordinary rhythm" of 'Profesor', a red-brindled bull, born in October 2020, branded with number 101 and weighing 535 kg. This specimen was fought in fourth place on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, by the bullfighter David Fandila 'El Fandi'.
Pablo and Fernando Lozano, representing the prestigious Toledo ranch, received the award from Santiago Sánchez-Apellániz. Pablo Lozano expressed his gratitude, stating that it is an honor for ranchers to see their products recognized after so much effort and dedication, feeling great pride for the city of Seville and its bullring.
“
"It is an honor for ranchers that their products, after so much eagerness, effort, and dreams, can be seen awarded; it is a source of pride and satisfaction for the city where we are and the bullring where it was fought."
The Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water, and Rural Development, María Consolación Vera Sánchez, closed the gala, emphasizing the relevance of extensive livestock farming in Andalusia for territorial settlement, wealth generation, and employment in rural areas. She also acknowledged the essential contribution of veterinarians in the rural environment and in the conservation of the fighting bull.
During the same session, Gold Medals were awarded to Fidel Astudillo Navarro, and honorary membership titles to Rafael Belmonte Gómez and Fernando Portero Durán.
