The situation at the Sevilla Zoosanitary Center has reached a critical point, with animal remains being stored in a private freezer loaned by an employee. The official refrigeration unit has been non-operational for over a year, leading to this provisional solution that has been denounced by the UGT union section at the City Council.
The union warns of "institutional neglect" and "serious health risks," stating that the center operates thanks to the "commitment and professionalism of its staff" in the face of underinvestment. Furthermore, the crematorium oven also remains inoperable, a tool considered "key for public health."
UGT also denounces a lack of personnel, delays in essential contracts for food supply, and the purchase of biocides, as well as deficiencies in personal protective equipment (EPIs), many of which are expired. The situation is exacerbated by the municipal decision to use a plastic container for depositing dead animals on weekends without adequate refrigeration.
The grotesque situation that the staff faces daily.
For its part, the Sevilla City Council has assured that it is processing the purchase of a new freezer and is considering renting a provisional unit. Municipal sources denied the accumulation of carcasses or health risks, stating that they have sufficient refrigeration units and a contract for the removal of animal remains.
