The railway company Renfe will implement a new timetable for its High-Speed (AVE) trains connecting Málaga and Barcelona starting September 14. According to the company, this modification aims to "better adapt the offer to mobility patterns and increase seat availability during peak demand hours".
The rescheduling will affect both the Barcelona-Málaga route and vice versa. The train currently departing from Barcelona Sants at 15:41 and arriving at Málaga María Zambrano at 22:47 will now depart in the morning at 8:30, arriving in Málaga at 15:11. Conversely, the AVE Málaga-Barcelona train, which currently leaves Málaga at 8:22 and arrives in Barcelona at 14:54, will change its schedule to depart Málaga at 15:50 and arrive in Barcelona at 23:00.
Renfe has emphasized that this reorganization "will maintain the current capacity and number of connections" between the two cities. The schedules for trains connecting Granada with Barcelona have also been altered. Currently, there are about ten daily connections between Málaga and Barcelona, though only one is direct; the rest require a change. The direct service operates daily, including weekends.
The journey time for the direct route is approximately 6 hours and 40 minutes from Barcelona and about 7 hours and 10 minutes from Málaga. The company advises travelers to check the updated schedules through its official channels and has stated that it will contact passengers who have already purchased tickets for these dates. Options for free changes and cancellations have been made available for tickets affected by these modifications.
