After a night of railway disruptions due to a breakdown that halted service for several hours, normalcy is progressively returning to Sevilla. Adif, the railway infrastructure manager, restored train circulation in the province early this morning.
Despite the reopening of the lines, the Sevilla-Santa Justa station experienced some chaos this morning due to accumulated delays. The first AVE high-speed train bound for Madrid, for instance, departed over an hour late.
The origin of the problem was detected at 8:00 PM on Tuesday in La Rinconada. A cable from a tension measurement line detached and fell onto Adif's overhead catenary wires, interrupting rail traffic. The impact not only caused significant damage to the infrastructure but also triggered a fire on the track itself, necessitating an urgent intervention by firefighters.
Consequently, Adif and several railway operators were forced to suspend circulation. Connections between Sevilla-Santa Justa and Guadajoz were completely disabled, disrupting services heading to Madrid from Andalusia as well as Media Distancia and Cercanías commuter trains.
Technical teams from Endesa and Adif worked in coordination throughout the night to repair the infrastructure as quickly as possible. The task was highly complex due to the risks involved in working on electrical installations and catenary systems.
Once the work was completed and the necessary safety checks were performed, the resumption of rail traffic was authorized for Wednesday morning.
Renfe, the train operator, informed affected passengers through its official channels and arranged alternative road transport to mitigate inconvenience to customers.
