The flamingo colony at the lagoon has reached a historic record this season with 35,177 breeding pairs and an estimated 15,500 chicks. Since the ringing program began in 1984, nearly 270,000 flamingos have been born in this natural site, with over 21,000 having been tagged with rings.
The marking of these birds is crucial for scientific monitoring, allowing researchers to understand their movement, survival, and behavior patterns. Collected data indicates that over 70% of the ringed birds have been re-identified, with more than 167,000 records across a total of 23 countries.
The abundant rainfall this year has created exceptional conditions for the species' reproduction, further solidifying Fuente de Piedra as one of the most significant refuges for flamingos in Andalusia.
