This weekend, LaLiga EA Sports launched a retro campaign that has deeply resonated with football fans. The initiative aims to commemorate a past era of the beautiful game in Spain, very different from the current one, through animations and graphics that evoke the late 20th and early 21st centuries. The league's digital platforms and those of First and Second Division teams have been filled with images and videos that stir nostalgia.
Sevilla Fútbol Club has been one of the protagonists of this initiative. LaLiga has shared a series of photographs of footballers who marked an era for the red and white team. Among them, the figure of Diego Armando Maradona stands out, who wore the Sevillian jersey in the 1992/1993 season. The publication also includes legends such as Biri Biri, who gave his name to an ultra group, Cholo Simeone, current coach of Atlético de Madrid, and strikers Vassilis Tsartas and Toni Polster, remembered for their impact during difficult times for the club.
The campaign has also highlighted the golden generation of the early 21st century, with names like Julio Baptista, Adriano Correia, and Luis Fabiano. However, one of the most remembered and beloved by fans is Frédéric Kanouté. The Franco-Malian striker became an idol thanks to his talent and charisma, forming a lethal duo with Luis Fabiano, known as 'O'Fabuloso'. Together, they were key in achieving historic titles for Sevilla FC, including a UEFA Super Cup, a Spanish Super Cup, a Copa del Rey, and two UEFA Cups.
These glorious memories contrast with the current delicate situation of Sevilla FC. After almost two decades of success, the club is going through an institutional and sporting crisis that has led it to flirt with relegation spots in LaLiga. With three consecutive defeats and only two points from the danger zone with eight matches remaining, the upcoming clash against Atlético de Madrid is crucial to maintain distance from teams like Elche.
