This event, led by national coach Chus Mateo, aims to directly assess the progress of players over 20 years old who, although no longer part of youth national teams, could join the senior national team in the coming years. The initiative highlights the FEB's strategy to continuously track Spanish talents developing their careers in the United States.
Among those called up, five players have a formative background in the Unicaja youth academy, at Los Guindos. These athletes, who spent several years of their development in Málaga, include Álvaro Folgueiras, Rubén Domínguez, Pablo Tamba, Victory Onuetu, and José Roberto Tanchyn. Most of them will continue their careers in university competition next season.
“"This training camp will be a great opportunity to learn how the players who have been developing their careers away from Spain, especially in the USA, have evolved, and who are no longer on the radar of the FEB's youth national teams. In addition to their evolution, we will understand how they work and how they understand the game."
The coach also emphasized the importance of adapting to the reality of player development in the United States, a trend that, according to him, “is here to stay.” This concentration not only benefits the national team but also offers Spanish clubs the opportunity to evaluate these players for future incorporation into their structures.
The coaching staff accompanying Chus Mateo includes Paco Redondo, assistant coach for the national team and youth team coordinator, along with other Spanish coaches with experience in American universities, such as Pedro García.
