The Lope de Vega Theater in Seville will close the 'Paraíso' stand during the upcoming Flamenco Biennial. This decision has prompted a response from the People's Party (PP) to the criticisms of the socialist opposition. The socialist municipal spokesperson, Antonio Muñoz, criticized the «half-hearted» reopening of the cultural venue, to which the government team of José Luis Sanz responded by pointing to the «ruin» left by the previous administration.
Muñoz described the stand's closure as an «absolute disgrace», emphasizing that safety «must always come before any other consideration» and that the City Council must «strictly» adhere to technical reports. The socialist spokesperson attributed the reopening announcement to the «usual improvisation» of the current local administration, questioning why the program was announced and tickets sold without first verifying that the entire capacity could be used.
In response, the Seville City Council's delegate for Culture, Angie Moreno, reminded that «the disgrace was leaving this theater in ruins for eight years without investing a single euro in its maintenance». According to Moreno, upon taking office in May 2023, they found an «unsustainable» theater with conclusive technical reports on safety deficiencies.
Moreno detailed a comprehensive intervention that has renewed essential infrastructure, including the dimmer room, sound system, stage lift, and electrical installation, with an investment exceeding 9.5 million euros. She explained that the 'Paraíso' stand will be completely replaced because safety «is always above any other consideration».
The delegate concluded that restoring the Lope de Vega means returning to Seville a theater «more modern, safer, and more accessible», and announced that accessibility measures will continue to be incorporated to make it «a theater for everyone».
