Antonio Cordón's sports planning for the 2025-26 season at Sevilla FC, encompassing both summer and winter transfer windows, has been largely deemed unsuccessful. Despite having advanced pre-contracts for the upcoming campaign with players like Patrik Mercado, Juan Iglesias, and Arouna Sanganté, contingent on remaining in the First Division, the performance of his current signings is under scrutiny.
In the recent and vital match against Atlético de Madrid, where the Nervión team secured three crucial points to avoid relegation, coach Luis García Plaza only included one of Cordón's seven signings in the starting eleven: goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos. This figure is remarkably low, considering the total number of new additions.
A particularly striking case is that of the sole winter reinforcement, French forward Neal Maupay. His arrival led to the departure of Alfon and the medical leave of Marcao. However, the striker on loan from Olympique de Marseille has not played a single minute under García Plaza, being excluded from the squad in his debut in Oviedo and remaining on the bench against Atlético.
Other Cordón signings, such as César Azpilicueta (due to physical issues), Alexis Sánchez (lack of rhythm), Gabriel Suazo (inconsistency), Batista Mendy (tactical preferences), and Fabio Cardoso (complete ostracism), have had minimal impact. The exception is Vlachodimos, who is having an excellent season, although his continuity in Nervión is uncertain due to offers received by his original club, Newcastle.
The situation of Federico Gattoni, who returned in January and was registered by the sports management's decision, is similar to Cardoso's, as he also does not feature in the coach's plans, even being surpassed by academy players like Castrín. In the second half of the match against Atlético, Alexis Sánchez made a brief appearance, as did Suazo and Mendy, who came on in the final minutes.
Following the break, the upcoming consecutive matches against Levante and Osasuna will force García Plaza to manage his squad's efforts and give opportunities to more players, given the team's tight physical condition.
