The Ministry of University, Research and Innovation has greenlit 2,790 regional salary increments, benefiting more than 2,000 professors and researchers within Andalusia's public university system. This decision follows over 3,600 applications submitted by the Teaching and Research Staff (PDI) from the community's nine public universities.
These regional supplements represent additional financial remuneration linked to activities in teaching, research, knowledge transfer, innovation, and university management. Each recognized increment amounts to 1,800 consolidated euros annually, permanently incorporated into the beneficiary's salary. The system allows for up to five increments, aiming for excellence in each area.
The 2025 evaluation marks the second call under the new model agreed upon in 2024 between the Regional Government of Andalusia, university rectors, and trade unions. The updated system establishes an annual periodicity for recognizing these supplements, significantly improving the previous model.
The 2025 call introduces significant changes in merit assessment for certain types of PDI staff, shifting from hours of dedication to quinquennial periods in teaching and sexennial periods in research, knowledge transfer, and innovation, a criterion now generally applied to all faculty.
The new system also considers the teaching and research activity of staff on maternity or paternity leave, or on leave for childcare or care of first-degree relatives, or due to gender-based violence, ensuring these situations do not penalize professional careers.
Substantial improvements are incorporated in academic management. Periods shorter than one year in academic and governance roles can be accumulated to achieve increments in this sphere, offering flexibility particularly for those with discontinuous management responsibilities.
The Regional Government also accounts for quinquennial and sexennial periods evaluated independently of whether they have been recognized for those accessing permanent teaching positions. For PDI who became permanent staff in 2025, merits approved while they held labor status are counted, even if not yet officially validated.
The regulatory framework has considerably expanded the eligible staff categories. Approximately 18,400 professors and researchers in Andalusia can now apply for these supplements, including full-time interim substitute professors, associate professors, and researchers of excellence, categories not covered by the previous model.
Generally, the process targets PDI affiliated with Andalusian public universities, removing the previous seniority requirement. Exceptionally, professionals from other public academic institutions serving in the Andalusian public university system may apply if they demonstrate at least two years of continuous service prior to the application period.
