The Ronda City Council celebrated International Rural Women's Day at the Alameda del Tajo, with the reading of a manifesto promoted by the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP). The event, presided over by Mayor Mari Paz Fernández, emphasized the importance of this commemoration and the essential role of women in rural areas.
The mayor highlighted that Ronda is a city where the primary sector, agriculture, and livestock farming are significantly led by women, noting that 34% of agricultural and livestock holdings are managed by them. "This day is important, of course, because we are a city where the primary sector, agriculture, and livestock farming are led by women. 34% of agricultural and livestock holdings are and are run by women," she stated.
The FEMP manifesto recalled that October 15th, proclaimed by United Nations, contributes to empowering and recognizing women and girls in sustainable development, food security, poverty eradication, and the progress of rural communities. The FEMP stressed that this recognition must translate into concrete measures for the economic autonomy of rural women, ensuring their access to public services, participation in decision-making, and decent working conditions.
Fernández emphasized that the commemoration holds special relevance in Ronda and its region, as women's contributions extend beyond the agricultural sphere. "Women are farmers, ranchers, entrepreneurs, artisans, caregivers, researchers, teachers, public representatives, and fundamental agents for social and territorial cohesion. They are the ones who keep our towns alive," she declared.
The councilwoman also highlighted the role of local entities as administrations closest to citizens, essential for guaranteeing equal opportunities in rural areas. "From this proximity, we promote public policies adapted to the reality of each territory, fostering women's participation, strengthening social cohesion, and contributing to the free development of personal and professional projects wherever they choose to live," she explained.
Finally, Fernández mentioned the presence at the event of Elena Jiménez, the new president of AFAMMER Málaga (Association of Families and Women of the Rural Environment), and praised the work carried out by this organization.
