The Social Services Area of the Vícar City Council, in collaboration with the Gypsy Community Program, has carried out various recreational activities to commemorate International Day of Play. These initiatives, aimed at fostering family participation and outdoor play among the younger generation, took place during the afternoons of June 8, 9, and 10 in the neighborhoods of La Lomilla, La Cimilla, and Las Cabañuelas, respectively.
The initiative is part of the commemoration of International Day of Play, celebrated on June 11 and proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly as a fundamental right of childhood, enshrined in Article 31 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
Under the slogan “Playing is growing,” the program has aimed to promote spaces for coexistence and family leisure, in response to the increasing use of screens and the decrease in time dedicated to free outdoor play. The City Council emphasizes that play is crucial for children's cognitive, emotional, and social development, as well as enhancing their imagination, socialization, and emotional management.
Furthermore, the role of play as a driver of social cohesion and tolerance is highlighted, contributing to conflict prevention and the promotion of inclusion from early ages, as well as the adoption of positive habits related to respecting rules and others. These activities are part of the general objectives of the Gypsy Community Program, promoted by the Regional Ministry of Social Inclusion, Youth, Families, and Equality for the 2026 fiscal year.
