The Romanian Orthodox Church in Roquetas de Mar was the setting for the traditional Resurrection Mass, an event that annually brings together numerous faithful to celebrate one of the most significant moments in the Orthodox Christian calendar.
The ceremony, deeply rooted in Romanian Orthodox tradition, began at 12 AM on Saturday with the temple in darkness. However, to synchronize with Romania's time, in Roquetas de Mar the announcement of Christ's Resurrection was brought forward by an hour, symbolized by a lit candle carried by the priest.
Subsequently, attendees are invited to light their own candles. Immediately after, everyone leaves the church to walk three times around the temple, commemorating the three days that, according to the Gospel, Christ remained dead. The Gospel is read at the closed church door before the faithful return inside.
After the mass, glasses of wine and bread are prepared to be blessed, which the faithful take home along with the lit candle. Painted eggs are also blessed, in a moving ceremony that annually gathers hundreds of people at the Las Salinas temple.
