The city of El Ejido has hosted one of the most prominent sporting events on its calendar, the 'Ciudad de las Hortalizas' Half Marathon. This edition achieved a milestone by selling out all initial bibs, leading the organization to add one hundred additional spots, reaching a total of 1,300 participants across adult and children's categories.
The starting gun for the main 21-kilometer race, as well as the 10.5 and 5-kilometer promotional races, was fired by the Mayor of El Ejido, accompanied by the Sports Councilor and other council members, along with representatives from collaborating companies.
The winners of this edition were Abdelhakim Elissaoui in the men's category and Aurora Guevara in the women's. The men's podium was completed by Jonnathan Aguilera in second place and Alberto Segovia in third, while in the women's, Lidia García took second position and Sole Cumplido was the third-place finisher.
Organized by the El Ejido City Council through the Municipal Sports Institute and the Murgiverde Athletics Club, the race had the collaboration of various companies. One of this year's novelties was the earlier start time at 09:00, aiming to offer more favorable conditions for runners by avoiding the hottest hours.
The route began at the Santo Domingo Municipal Stadium and passed through emblematic points of the municipality such as the Boulevard, the Plaza Mayor, the Porcia Maura roundabout, the Ciavieja Archaeological Site, and the surroundings of the Municipal Park. The event was enlivened with entertainment throughout the itinerary, including the presence of a professional speaker and a DJ, creating a festive atmosphere. At the finish line, all participants received a runner's box, courtesy of one of the collaborating companies.
The event also highlighted its focus on inclusive sports, with the participation of athletes in handbikes and runners accompanying people in wheelchairs. A comprehensive security deployment, consisting of the Local Police, Civil Protection, and volunteers from sports clubs, ensured the smooth running of the event.
