The image of Saint Mark the Evangelist paraded through the streets of El Ejido during the procession-pilgrimage, an event that blends history, devotion, identity, and tradition. The day began with a mass in honor of the saint at the Parish Church of San Isidro Labrador, accompanied by the choir of the Hermandad del Rocío de El Ejido. Prior to this, approximately 6,000 traditional doughnuts were distributed.
The parade featured 51 floats decorated for the occasion, along with over fifty horses and carriages with riders. Thousands of attendees from various locations gathered along the route, enjoying the music of the Cristo del Amor Musical Group and the El Ejido Symphonic Band. Both the mass and the procession-pilgrimage were broadcast live via the El Ejido City Council's YouTube channel.
The San Marcos festivities have seen record participation in all activities organized by the Culture Department of the El Ejido City Council. Among this year's novelties, the wine tasting event was extended to two days, bringing together 200 people to sample wines from the Pago Almaraes winery, a benchmark in oenological innovation in Andalusia. Tastings of local products such as Raf tomatoes from Agroponiente and olive oil from OleoAlmanzora were also offered.
Music was a fundamental part of the celebration, with free concerts attracting thousands. The Municipal Park was the hub of Saturday's activities, featuring children's entertainment and the traditional tasting of broad beans with bacon and 'fritaílla'. For this, 2,500 kilograms of broad beans, 600 kilograms of bacon, 1,600 kilograms of fresh vegetables, and 1,200 kilograms of lean meat were prepared. Saturday's events concluded with a fireworks display at the La Cañada de Ugíjar Peri-urban Park.
To ensure the event's success, the El Ejido City Council implemented an extensive special cleaning and security operation. The cleaning operation, active until Monday, April 27, included continuous reinforcements in the fairgrounds and high-traffic areas. Regarding security, the Local Police deployed an operation with over 400 police services, supported by video surveillance, drones, and personal cameras, ensuring the peace of mind of attendees.
