The launch took place at the Rectorate Building, in an event presided over by the institution's rector, who was accompanied by the Director of Communication and the head of the Image Technology Center (CTI). During his speech, the rector highlighted the symbolism of the chosen title, emphasizing the importance of the university community in the local environment.
“"The graduates, the students of the University of Málaga, the alma mater of the university, are, precisely, the light of the city."
The video, a collaboration between the CTI and the university's communication service, showcases various spaces and moments of university life. The narrative focuses on the essence of the institution, its desire to integrate into the city and province, and its vocation to be a beacon of knowledge for the community.
With nearly 40,000 students and over half a century of history, the University of Málaga is portrayed in this piece as a consolidated and expanding entity, where knowledge, talent, and values-based education are fundamental pillars. The rector also noted the goal of continuing to expand the university's capacity without compromising educational quality.
“"This is a video to show what we are and what we will be, and to take UMA to congresses and events held outside Málaga."
Furthermore, the need to create opportunities to retain talent in the province was addressed, promoting the development of the university itself as the main way to achieve this. Close collaboration with the business sector, especially in the technological field, through joint projects and chairs, was highlighted.
During the event, the rector also brought to light one of the institution's main challenges: funding. He stated that the University of Málaga is underfunded, a situation that, while common in public universities, is particularly pronounced in the case of UMA within the Andalusian system. He detailed that the institution receives a significantly lower amount per student compared to the regional average and other better-funded universities, which directly impacts its capacity for growth and consolidation of teaching and research quality.
