The Commonwealth of Municipalities of Axarquía has opened the registration period for the seventh edition of the Mar-Maroma, a 47.7-kilometer hiking traverse that this year features a modified route, starting from Alcaucín and finishing in Torre del Mar.
The route, which crosses the Axarquía region from the interior to the coast, was presented at the Vélez-Málaga City Council. On this occasion, participants will begin the ascent to the highest peak in the province, La Maroma, and then traverse various enclaves of Axarquía.
The maximum number of participants has been limited to 180. Collaborating city councils will provide refreshments, as well as breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Participant reception, registration confirmation, and the delivery of backpacks and bibs will take place in the Torre del Mar Lighthouse area, which will serve as the finish line. From there, participants will be transported by bus at 7:30 AM to Alcaucín, where the journey will officially begin, with an estimated duration of 15:45 hours.
The route covers 47.7 kilometers with a positive and negative elevation gain of 1,680 meters each. The registration period opened at 10:00 AM this morning and will close on May 11 at 11:59 PM. Registrations can be formalized through Dorsalchip, with a cost of 40 euros for federated individuals and 47 euros for non-federated individuals, the latter including the necessary federative coverage for the two days of activity.

"From the Commonwealth, we reinforce this tourist promotion; we will give them merchandising, as well as our tourist map with QR codes provided by each city council so they have the opportunity to get to know our 31 towns."
Marilé Muñiz, vice president of the Axarquía Costa del Sol Commonwealth, highlighted the tourism value of the competition, emphasizing the visibility it provides to Axarquía by showcasing its diversity and its most important natural resources: the sea and La Maroma peak, as well as the Axarquian capital and four towns in the Sierras Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama Natural Park. She also stressed the sporting component that makes Axarquía an ideal setting for outdoor activities.

"The VII Marmaroma is a sporting activity that the Grupo de Montañismo del 17 has been carrying out since 2010, and its objective is to showcase the landscape diversity and environmental quality that exists in the Axarquía region through hiking. This year, as a novelty, the event is held in the opposite direction. Departure from the municipality of Alcaucín and arrival at the beaches of Torre del Mar."
Concepción Callejón, president of the Club Deportivo de Montaña Grupo del 17, explained that the Mar-Maroma Night Traverse is a non-competitive sporting event organized by her club and the Sports Area of the Vélez City Council, with the collaboration of the towns of Axarquía and the Association for the Tourist Promotion of Axarquía. She underlined that the goal is to promote the landscape diversity and environmental quality of the region through hiking, and that this year's novelty is the change in the direction of the route.
