In an era dominated by individual consumption of streaming content, the MK2 company has launched an ambitious project with its new cinema screens at the Málaga Nostrum Commercial Park. These facilities, opening to the public this Friday, June 5th, aim to offer a high-quality, luxurious experience designed to draw audiences back from the comfort of their homes.
During the pre-opening presentation, complex officials highlighted that this is the only entirely premium cinema complex in the province. This initiative is presented as a technological and social response to digital platforms that have diminished attendance at traditional cinemas, a sector that, despite challenges, is resisting.
To compete with the economic accessibility of digital platforms, the MK2 at Málaga Nostrum introduces a loyalty card, available in individual or family formats. This card allows access to the screens any day of the week for a fixed price. According to Álvaro Postigo, general director of MK2 in Spain, this strategy has shown significant retention rates among users.
The short-term acquisition strategy is complemented by the opening coinciding with the Fiesta del Cine (Cinema Festival), setting the ticket price at 3.50 euros between June 8th and 11th. Contrasting with the massive and automated offerings of digital catalogs, physical cinemas are focusing on diversification and content specialization to attract specific communities.
The complex features 11 screens and approximately 1,000 adjustable comfort seats. Its programming will combine independent cinema, European films, original version movies with subtitles, and dedicated spaces for classics and cult titles. Among the initial screenings are He-man, The Masters of the Universe, Every Day a Fool is Born, Scary Movie, Backrooms, and All the Things We Never Were.
Technically, the complex aims to differentiate itself with Christie laser projectors, Harkness screens for uniform luminance control, and 7.1 bi-amplified sound systems, offering an immersive experience that, according to MK2 officials, cannot be compared to home television.
Representatives from the Málaga City Council noted during the presentation that post-pandemic dynamics, including lockdowns and the increase in domestic screen sizes, have altered public habits. They emphasized the 'liturgy' of cinema, the social gathering, and subsequent discussion, as elements that individualized consumption cannot replicate.
The investment in this cinematic upgrade exceeds 7 million euros and is part of a comprehensive renovation project for the Málaga Nostrum Park, led by developer Bogaris with a total budget of 62 million euros. An annual attendance of over 300,000 viewers is expected, as the sector measures its strength against the digital environment by renewing its physical infrastructure.
