Concern regarding mobility in the province of Málaga has significantly escalated, positioning it as the second most urgent problem for its inhabitants, trailing only the housing crisis, according to a recent study by the Madeca Foundation.
The report, presented by the Diputación de Málaga, highlights that while the scarcity and high cost of housing remain the primary concern for 44% of respondents, mobility has tripled its relevance compared to the previous year. This increase reflects growing citizen dissatisfaction with continuous traffic jams on the A-7 and the limited public transport options.
Among the most requested solutions by Málaga residents to alleviate this problem are the extension of the coastal train, the elimination of tolls on the AP-7, and substantial improvements to the Cercanías commuter rail service. This last demand gains particular importance given the announcement of the closure of the line between Málaga and Fuengirola for works, scheduled for late 2027 and expected to last half a year.
The study, which compares data with the 2025 Barometer, shows a significant shift in the perception of problems. While last year housing (49.5%), unemployment (7.4%), healthcare (7%), and mobility (4.6%) were the main concerns, this year mobility has moved from fourth to second place, reaching 12% of mentions, only surpassed by housing (47%). Healthcare (6.3%), unemployment (5.7%), and politics (5%) follow on the list.
Residents of Axarquía, the Western Costa del Sol, and the regions of Antequera and Guadalteba are those who express the greatest concern about mobility. Satisfaction with travel and transport barely passes, with a rating of 5.08 at the regional level and 5.31 at the provincial level.
Citizen proposals to improve mobility include the extension of the Cercanías in the Costa del Sol to Algeciras (25.7%), the liberation of the AP-7 toll (20.5%), the improvement of existing Cercanías lines (13.1%), the expansion of the A-7 from Vélez-Málaga to El Palo (12.5%), the reinforcement of interurban bus lines (12.4%), and the expansion of the A-357 road between Málaga and Campillos (10.7%). This comprehensive analysis was based on telephone surveys of 2,050 people over 18 years of age from all regions of the province, excluding the capital.
